News

November 6, 2011: Winter is right around the corner, and if you own a motorcycle and live in a part of the country that endures freezing temperatures, rain and snow this time of year, you're likely also staring at a long, painful stint out of the saddle. The good news is that time keeps on slipping into the future, and spring is but a skip down the calendar. Fortunately, we have the power of the internet to help scratch the riding itch during the dark months. Scott Toepfer has finally released his short film, "It's Better in the Wind," and the 15-minute clip spends time following three riders as they explore the world on a trio of vintage customs.  (more)

May 19, 2011: The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has revised its labeling for new motorcycle helmets.  The agency said new stickers that read “D.O.T. F.M.V.S.S. No. 218 Certified” would be given to helmets that met federal standards for impact absorption, penetration resistance and strap strength. The labels will also identify the helmet manufacturer and model. The abbreviation refers to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 for motorcycle helmets.  (more)

May 15, 2011: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has updated the motorcycle helmet law in an attempt to stop people from wearing improperly certified helmets and novelty helmets. The law doesn't change the construction of helmets directly, but changes the way they're labeled, to make it more difficult to mimic DOT compliance certifications.  (more)

March 17, 2011: Two emblems of restless American freedom are being offered for sale to the public for the first time.  The Guggenheim Museum in New York is selling, without reserve, its two exact replicas of the Harley-Davidson-based choppers ridden by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in the 1969 film “Easy Rider.”  (more)

October 19, 2010: On a recent Friday evening, a 51-year-old motorcyclist was killed when he was struck by a car, police said. He was riding alongside a companion who was not involved in the accident, according to KMBC, an ABC affiliate. The driver of the car was not injured. (more)

Score one for the good guys. Not that we think police in general are bad guys or anything, but after watching this video of a Maryland state trooper jumping out of his unmarked car in plain clothes while brandishing a gun, we're not exactly keen to put him in the good guy category, either. (more)

September 20, 2010: Harley-Davidson was the feel-good turnaround story of the 1990s and then the poster-boy for brand values in the 2000s. How often did you read that Harley was the only consumer brand whose customers were so loyal they wore the company's logo tattooed on their chest? (more)

August 30, 2010: Tragic events unfolded at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend when Peter Lenz, 13, was killed after falling off of his motorcycle and being hit by another rider during a warm-up lap. (more)
